HIGH SCHOOL

Well, the youngest of the Roderick family is off to high school. It brings back memories of my hs days . . . so many fond thoughts rustle in my head. Allow me to share a few.

We used to celebrate birthdays by going out to breakfast in our PJ's. We loved going at 6:00am to the "The Village Inn" followed by a race home to change clothes and get to school.

Dragging State Street back in my day meant it was a night to pick up boys. The word "dragging" implies racing cars, but my friends and I were in it for the boys . . . only the boys.

We loved to go to the movies . . . JAWS, The Way We Were, A Star is Born, American Graffiti, Live and Let Die, Rocky. It didn't matter . . . popcorn, coke and my girls . . . nothing better.

I was dating a wrestler and my hs was a powerhouse in wrestling. So what's a girl to do . . . many matches and many massages after matches was my method of operation.

I had several favorite teachers but Mr. Nicolason and Mr. Kamnicar were two of my favorites. I learned to love English and history because of these two phenomenal teachers.

I drove a '65 Mustang, bright yellow, named Merlin. My friend drove a '66 convertible Mustang, red, named Mavis. Need I say more?

Some Friday nights we were simply bored. We entertained ourselves with many subversive activities that if I were to share with you could cause me severe consequences. Suffice it to say that they were not illegal but could be misconstrued as such.

We used to go in the girl's bathroom at school and we'd chew wintergreen Lifesavers and green sparks would pop out of our mouths. It must be completely dark for this one to work, but work it does . . . promise.

Sluffing (ditching) class and going out to lunch was a weekly activity, especially during my senior year. I don't know why we called it sluffing instead of ditching . . . must be a Utah thing.

We had a lot of Stomps, dances without dates, and those were so fun because you could dance with anyone and not feel bad about leaving someone out. Dances were always by escort only.

My first date was with really great guy and we went to John Denver concert. It was so cool because our families knew each other from church. He left a card on our doorstep and gave me one ticket inside and I had to figure out who it was from or go to the concert alone. That was really creative on his part and the concert was great.

On days like today, I really miss high school.
